City of Cape Coral

City Council Elections 2017

The City of Cape Coral will be holding Primary and General Elections in 2017.  The Primary Election will be held September 12, 2017.  The General Election will be held November 7, 2017.  City voters will elect a Mayor and Council Members for Council Districts 1, 4, 6 and District 5.  This is a non-partisan and citywide election.

The Appointment of Campaign Treasurer and Designation of Campaign Depository forms can be found on the City website (www.capecoral.net).  A campaign file may be opened with the City Clerk’s office any time prior to or during qualifying week.

Qualifying for potential candidates will begin Monday, July 3, 2017 at 7:30 am and end Friday, July 7, 2017 at 1:00 pm (excluding July 4th).  All candidates must be continuous, full-time residents of the City for the entire calendar year preceding their qualification for office.  Candidates must also reside in their respective Districts. The terms of office for Mayor and Districts 1, 4, and 6 are four (4) years.  The vacancy in the District 5 seat is to fill the remainder of the existing term (expiring in November, 2019) due to the resignation of the current Council Member.

All terms begin the 1st regular Council meeting held after the date of the General Election.  Candidates must pay the required fees and complete all necessary paperwork in the Office of the City Clerk during the qualifying period.  A Financial Disclosure Form must be completed and you must show your voter registration card.

The total fee to run for office of Council Member is $426.00, which includes the filing fee of $100 plus the Election Assessment fee of 1% of the annual salary of $32,600.00 ($326.00).  The total fee to run for office of Mayor is $516.00, which includes the filing fee of $150 plus the Election Assessment fee of 1% of the annual salary of $36,600.00 ($366.00).

Even though candidates must qualify in their respective districts, the elections themselves are “at large” and not district-specific races.  This means all voters in Cape Coral can vote for candidates in every district.
